Formula used

Hourly: Gross = Hours worked × Hourly rate
Salary: Gross = Annual salary ÷ Pay periods per year
Deductions = Gross × (Federal % + State % + FICA %) ÷ 100
Net pay = Gross − Deductions
FICA default = 7.65% (Social Security 6.2% + Medicare 1.45%)

Worked example

Hourly: 40 hours × $25/hour = $1,000 gross

Withholding: Federal 12% + State 5% + FICA 7.65% = 24.65% total

Deductions: $1,000 × 24.65% = $246.50

Net pay: $1,000 − $246.50 = $753.50

Frequently asked questions

Is this payroll calculator accurate for my actual paycheck?

It is a reasonable estimate, not an official pay stub. Actual withholding varies by state, by employer, and by each employee's W-4 allowances, pre-tax deductions, and filing status. Use it for planning and budgeting, then confirm with a real payroll provider.

What does FICA include?

FICA combines Social Security tax at 6.2% and Medicare tax at 1.45%, for a standard employee rate of 7.65% on gross wages. High earners may owe an additional Medicare surtax, which this simplified calculator does not model.

Why is my state tax zero or blank?

Not every state has an income tax. Leave it at 0 if you are in a no-income-tax state such as Florida, Texas, or Washington, or enter your state's rate if it applies.

Does this account for pre-tax deductions like a 401(k) or health insurance?

No. Those reduce taxable income before withholding is calculated, so your real net pay would be higher than this estimate shows. Enter the post-deduction taxable amount if you want a closer figure.

How does hourly pay differ from salary in this calculator?

For hourly pay, gross is hours worked times the hourly rate for the period. For salary, gross is the annual salary divided by the number of pay periods per year (weekly, biweekly, semimonthly, or monthly).
